Colostomy and Ileostomy
Sometimes after bowel surgery, either for safety of because it was part of the plan for the operation, the bowel is not joined together inside. When this is done the end of the bowel brought out onto the skin is called an stoma.
If this is the small bowel it is called an Ileostomy and if it is the large bowel it is called a Colostomy.
The contents of the bowel will then come out through this opening into a plastic pouch stuck over the stoma. This is called an stoma bag.
Often, as in this case, the stoma is formed to protect a join which has been made in the bowel and will be closed when the join has healed.
