TAMIS surgery allow the surgeon to operate within the rectum and the lower part of the pelvis using a laparoscope and micro instruments.

This means that polyps or small, early cancers can be removed from within the rectum without removing the entire rectum.  This treatment is only suitable for benign polyps and the earliest stages of rectal cancer but in these cases represents a significant advantage over open surgery.
